Hijri Dates on a CV: Why ATS Systems Get Them Wrong

Most enterprise ATS platforms expect Gregorian dates. Hijri-only employment ranges can make experience look missing or incorrectly short.

Updated 2026-08-11

The parsing problem

Workday, Taleo, and SuccessFactors are built around Gregorian calendars. A line like 1442H to 1445H may not convert correctly, so duration filters and experience calculations fail.

Recruiters in Saudi Arabia understand Hijri dates. Software often does not.

What to put on your CV

Use Gregorian dates as the primary format for every role. If you want to include Hijri for local preference, add it in parentheses after the Gregorian range, or keep Hijri only on a locally tailored version that is not going through global ATS software.

  • Preferred: Mar 2020 to Nov 2023
  • Acceptable bilingual note: Mar 2020 to Nov 2023 (Rajab 1441 to Jumada I 1445)
  • Risky as the only format: 1441 to 1445

Education and certificates

The same rule applies to graduation years and certificate dates. If a Saudi certificate shows Hijri, convert the year for the English CV and keep the credential name accurate.

Frequently asked questions

Will recruiters reject Gregorian-only dates in Saudi Arabia?

No. Gregorian dates are standard on English professional CVs across the Kingdom and the wider Gulf.
